MATH 036

Insights into Mathematics

This course covers examples of mathematical applications in many areas including voting theory, fair division, apportionment, and Euler and Hamilton circuits. In this course, we hope to demonstrate to the students that mathematics is very useful in contemporary problems in our society - from voting theory issues to apportionment of the seats in the U.S. House of Representatives to optimizing the route taken by a delivery person and a variety of other issues. We focus on historical issues related to such contemporary problems and also discuss the merits of various problem-solving techniques throughout the course.
