ASTRO 130

Black Holes in the Universe

This course is intended to introduce students to the predicted properties of black holes and the astronomical evidence for their existence. It will cover spacetime, special and general relativity, types of black holes and their characteristics, the evaporation of black holes, wormholes and time travel. It combines basic physical concepts, astronomical observations, and philosophical ideas to present a complete picture of the current understanding of black holes. The course is intended for students who have completed and enjoyed the one-semester survey of modern astronomy, ASTRO 001 or 010.
